The following are optional cultural activities
that students may wish to experience on their own time. |
|
Bullfights
Since the 18th century, bullfighting has been a national spectator sport in
Spain. During the summer months, many bullfights are scheduled throughout the
country in every major city. The spectacle is full of drama, but is not for the
squemish.Bullfighting is primarily a
summertime sport, and it may not be possible to view a bullfight during your
tour at other times of the year.

Gypsy Flamenco
Flamenco music is quite recent (no more than 200 years old), even though its
origins can be found in Arab, Sefardi (Spanish-Jewish) and Christian Middle-Age
music. It is said that Flamenco emerged as a product of the mixture between two
cultures: the centuries-old "Andalusi" culture and the Gypsy culture which
appeared in Spain at the end of the Muslim era (15th century).
Flamenco performances take place year-round in
Sevilla, Cordoba, and Granada. |
|
Andalusi Music
The Andalusi Muslims developed their own distinctive style of music and song.
This style can still be found in North Africa today, and it is making a strong
resurgence in the land of its birth, thanks to its revival by today's Spanish
Muslims. We may hear some performances of the beautiful `ud and
accompanying instruments during our stay in Granada. |
