'It is said that the first casualty of war is truth, but that is not so, the first casualty of war is education' - from Foyle's War

It may not be a famous quote but it's a good one.

I'd want to know how education is the first casualty...it seems to me that truth is definitely among the first things to be hit, where as education might be among the last, greatly affected casualties, like for example the history of Soviet Occupation was followed by 50 years of very much distorted education about the course of the World War II. The inaccurate depiction of the past causes issues with virtue-formation for the upcoming generations...this would seem more plausible.

Greetings Lightsearch,

Your points are well taken.  I guess I was coming from the standpoint of having just watched the program.  I understood what it was saying.  When war takes over a country the first casualty is the ability for children to attend school and get their education, and thus when war goes on too long you then end up with generations of uneducated people, which is not a good thing.  It takes people backwards.

Would you agree with that?

Salaam,
Caringheart

I read a book by an Indian muslim, and in his foreword he wrote:

"Once a man do lie he needs ten more lies to make the first lie sound like the truth".

Yes, very good one.  So, so, true.
You also have to try and remember all those lies.
I must confess, I do not understand lying... how anyone ever thinks it serves any purpose.

10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:

13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:

14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:

15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path  Proverbs 1

Should be famous.

"Men since the beginning of time have sought peace. Various methods through the ages have been attempted to devise an international process to prevent or settle disputes between nations. From the very start workable methods were found in so far as individual citizens were concerned, but the mechanics of an instrumentality of larger international scope have never been successful. Military alliances, balances of power, Leagues of Nations, all in turn failed, leaving the only path to be 'by way of the crucible of war. The utter destructiveness of war now blocks out, this alternative. We have had our last chance. If we will not devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door. The problem basically is theological and involves a spiritual recrudescence and improvement of human character that will synchronize with our almost matchless advances in science, art, literature and all the material and cultural developments of the past 2000 years. It must be of the spirit if we are to save the flesh. "

"We were supposed to have reached a stage of civilization in which it might still be necessary to execute a criminal, but not to gloat, or to hang his wife and child by him while the orc-crowd hooted. The destruction of Germany, be it 100 times merited, is one of the most appalling world-catastrophes. Well, well,—you and I can do nothing about it. And that [should] be a measure of the amount of guilt that can justly be assumed to attach to any member of a country who is not a member of its actual Government. Well the first War of the Machines seems to be drawing to its final inconclusive chapter—leaving, alas, everyone the poorer, many bereaved or maimed and millions dead, and only one thing triumphant: the Machines." - J.R.R. Tolkien
