Assalamu alaikum

Since becoming Muslim I have started to learn how to pray, although I am not finding it easy to memorise the prayers. So by not praying properly I am not sure my prayers are valid and I feel very guilty. I was just wondering what techniques others have used and what has worked for them.

Assalamu alaikum,

I think just 3 recitations in prayer/shalat that a little bit challenging, i.e: fatihah, short surah and tashahud. If you can memorize a recitation in a week, within a month you can do a "perfect" shalat

1. First week: memorize alfateha (chapter 1 in the quran, it has 7 verses), http://www.islamicity.com/islamitv/?ref=3923 - audio http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/fatehaVideo.ram - video

2. Second week: memorize short surah (al-ikhlas) (chapter 112 in the quran, it has 4 verses), http://www.islamicity.com/islamitv/?ref=4084 - audio   http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/ikhlasVideo.ram - video

3. Third week: memorize tashahud (be read on the end of 2nd and the last rakaat/unit), http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/tashahud.ram - audio   http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/tashahudVideo.ram - video

The other recitations are very short:

1. Ruku http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/ruku.ram - audio   http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/rukuVideo.ram - video

2. Itidal (rising from ruku) http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/itidal.ram - audio   http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/itidalVideo.ram - video

3. Sajdah (bow down) http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/sujud.ram - audio   http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/sujudVideo.ram - video

Sample full Shalat Fajr (Dawn Prayer) http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/salatFajr.ram - video

Another sample short surah, surah al-kautsar (chapter 108 in the quran, it has 3 verses),   http://www.islamicity.com/Mosque/salat/audio/kautsar.ram - video

Walaikum Salam BelieverInOne,

Congragulation on being blessed by Allah swt with Islam. May Allah help you and all of us to be steadfast in our religion.

Apart from the links provided by Semar, you can also go thru the sticky thread in this same section "Info about Shalat". InshaAllah, it shall be reflective, as we also have salah telecasted from the holy city Madeenah.

Since you are new to Islam, i wish to share a hadith as well. Basically, one's prayer  does not suffice if he does not  recite the first chapter of holy Qur'an - Al Fatihah. If one  can recite neither  al-Fatihah nor other portions of Qur'an {due to some innate inability, poor memory, or because its a foreign language  he shud say "Subhaan Allah" which means glory be to Allah swt, "Alhamdu lillah - All praise is due to Allah", "La ilaha illal lah and Allahu Akbar". This is supported by  Rafaah ibn Rafa, who narrated  that the Prophet said, " If you have something from Qur'an , recite it. If not, then say Subhaan Allah, al-hamdu-lillah, La ilaha Illal la  and then bow".

This hadith is related by Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, an Nasaai.

You can offer you salah so, until to get them memorised.

this link works well.  i'v downloaded the file and play it while i pray listening to arabic reading in english.
but to tell you the truth it's taking longer to learn because i drift into the words being spoken and the depth of the prayer.i rarely lose step,it's weird. i seem to understand somehow.

I used to write down al-fatiha in English letters, as well as at-tawhid... just write them really big and put them on the ground in front of you while praying.

It works!

one way to remeber them is the majority of them rhyme, so what i did to help remeber, is recite one sentence at a time until i had is down pack..for instance say "al fatiha" i started with

"bissimillah araman araheem" _ keep reciting it..

alhumdulilah rabil alahmeen-

araman araheem maliki yamid deen

and just go from there....

As a revert myself, i first learned to memorize my prayers by writing everything down and just looking at it while i was praying.  i also learned some great ayat from

 http://www.mounthira.com/index.php?a=learningzone

^^this website is great because it allows you to stop and go at your own speed and also has a man recite it the way it should be recited.  it also has the english translations.  it's the best i've come across--i still use it.

also, since i didn't have anyone to help me i used youtube and other trusted websites.

if you're learning ayat (verses) to say besides al faitha (the opening) i would recommend Al Ikhlas, Ayat Al Kursi, An Nas and An Nasr.  They are small enough to memorize (with the exception of Al Kursi, but this is the most rewarding aya in the Quran!!)

OMG... Writing this makes me want to memorize more!!!

if you, or anyone else needs help i would LOVE to get to know you more!! i don't have many muslim friends and it makes me a little sad that i don't know many people really well.  so if you need help, you can message me, and we can chat online or something.  i would like that.

Asalaamu aleikum, BelieverInOne-

I felt the same way when I first reverted, but then I discovered a hadith that really encouraged me- I hope it helps you as well inshallah:

Narrated from Aisha (RAA) that the Prophet (SWS) said "The one who recites the Qur'an and learns it by heart will be  with the righteous scribes (in Jennah) and the one who exerts himself to learn the Qur'an by heart and recites it with great difficulty will have double reward". (al Bukhari 4937) Tongue

Does anyone know of any IPad apps to help learn prayers?  It would be helpful to have something that I could carry around with me.

I'm still confused about praying. I know the positions, but what to say and when to say it? Can someone explain it to me, step by step?

What is the purpose of saying the prayers in arabic instead of your native tongue?
