The voice of Shaitaan
Rasulallah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Proclaim the haqq,
even though it maybe bitter".
The issues of the status of music in Islam is one about which much
has been said and written. Whether it is due to our own negligence
or silence with regards to this topic, the Fact, is that a
significant percentage of the ummat remains uncertain of the ruling
regarding listening to music.
Sadly, despite the obvious uncertainty that lurks, the general
perception seems to be that listening to music is ok and thus
listening to music has become a waajib act of Muslim youth throughout
the globe. Today it must be one in a thousand Muslim youths that
doesn't listen to music despite the grave warnings that Rasulullah
(sallallahu alayhi wasallam) issued against people who listen to
music. Zaid Bin Argam (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates: "Once a youth
while singing passed by Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who was
walking in a street of Madinah. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi
wasallam) said: "Alas! O young man! Why do you not sing with the
Qur'aan (i.e. recite it beautifully instead of singing songs)? He
repeated this statement several time." (Dailmi)
The kufaar have openly declared their love for music and seemingly,
life cannot go on with out it. Families cannot drive to destination
without music playing in the car. The malls, convenience stores,
service stations and even public toilets seize to function properly
without a galaxy of speakers hanging from the ceiling. There is no
argument abut the fact that music has infiltrated every facet of
life. Hadrat Ibn Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah
(sallallahu alayhi wassalam) said: "On the Day of Quyaamah, Alaah
Azza Jl will proclaim: "Where are those who had protected their ears
and their eyes from the musical instruments of shaitaan?" (Allah
Ta'ala will instruct the Malaaikah): "They (the Angels) will
separate them and have them seated on dunes of musk and ambergris
then Allah Ta'ala will say to the Malaaikah: "Recite to them My
Tasbeeh and My Tamjeed." The Malaaikah will then recite to them with
such beautiful voices, the likes of which no one had ever heard."
Cellphones (whose essential purpose has no relationship with being
entertained by listening to music) have also succumbed to the voice
of shaitaan and quite notably even our youngest Muslim children carry
in their pockets the latest cellphones that boast and even better
ability to churn out the kufar anthems that promote the abandonment
of hayaa and the khauf of Allah Ta'ala.
A tool of the Devil
In a lengthy Hadith shareef narrated by Hadhrat Abu Umaamah
(radhiyallahu anhu), it is mentioned that on the occasion of the
expulsion of shaitaan from the heaven and his exile to earth, he
(Iblees) supplicated to Allah Ta'ala: "O my Rabb! You have exiled
me to earth and you have made me accursed .. Now, therefore bestow
to me a caller (who can call to my path). `Allah Ta'ala said: "(You
caller) is musical instruments " (Tibraani)
Even the learned folk among the nasarah will admit that musical
instruments and music originated with Iblees.
No amount of research is needed to confirm the clear fact that music
is completely unnecessary and isn't an essential part of a healthy
lifestyle. It is unthinkable that any Muslim with a healthy imaan
will do his utmost to find loopholes in order to legalize the voice
of shaitaan, for it renders no benefit to the ummt, especially in
this crucial time when the ummat is in dire need of Allah Tala's
nusraat. Allowing ourselves to follow the kufaar to the extend that
we make futile acts an incumbent practice and vital part of our lives
instead of filling that void with naafil ibadat, illustrates that
grave depth of our slumber.
Hadrat Abu Burzah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated: "We were with the
Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) on a journey when he heard two men
singing. The one was responding to the other (by means of singing
poetry). Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) then said: `Look who
these two are.' They (the Sahaabah) said: `They are s and so
(naming them). `Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) the cursed,
saying: "O Allah! Cast them upside down in Jahannum." (Majmauz
Zawaaid) If the poetic singing of these two men as a means of
conversing with each other could cause a supplication of this nature
to emanate from the mubarak lips of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi
wasallam). Imagine what emotions go through the heart of Rasulullah
(sallallahu alayhi wassallam) every Monday and Friday evening when it
becomes know to him that some members of his ummat cannot go anywhere
without enjoying and imitating the singing of immoral kufaar men and
women and evil musical instruments blaring from their cars and even
celllphones in absolute defiance and disobedience to his command.
Music has become like the modern day replacement of scripture and has
been termed `food for the soul'. It touches on virtually every
imaginable aspect of human life and seems to want to take the role of
wahi (revelation) by serving as a pillar of guidance to the masses of
the world. It comes as no surprise then, why a certain alim of deen
referred to music as "the Quran of shaitaan". A lot of the time the
lyrics of popular songs seemingly give the listener a solution to the
problem he/she might be faced with at the time, whilst some songs
give the listener a way to express his jubilation. The confounded
listeners carry out their expression by singing at the top of their
voices even in the toilet. Anger, love, hope, struggle or any other
experience that life might take you through-music caters for you
Allah Ta'ala has warned us not to take shaitaan as our friend for
surely he is unto manking an open enemy. The believer is supposed to
walk a different path in life. Taking Allah Azza Wa Jal alone as his
wakeel, the mu'meen raises the hands towards the heavens asking of
Allah Ta'ala in times of tribulation and making shukr to Him in times
of delight. Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan Bin Auf (radhiyallahu anhu)
narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "I have
forbidden two ignorant immoral voices: (The first) the sounds of
futility at the time of merrymaking, and the musical instruments of
shaitaan. (The second) the wailing sounds at the time of calamity
when the face is struck and the garments are torn." (Haakim in
What we currently observe is that music has been made as vital part
of relaxing and calming the nerves and this evil practice stands in
stark contrast with the correct method of relaxing and disrupts the
course of the one who seeks nearness to Allah Ta'ala and remembrance
of maut (death).
Precious time is wasted in satisfying the nafs and the hear and mind
are far removed from the concept of akhiraat.
The past time of a large number of Muslim youth has become one of
merrymaking, driving around the dunya in frivolity with cars churning
out the latest hits of shaitaan like their kufaar counterparts.
Gatherings where Muslim youths compare whose car has the loudest
sound have become like a waajib, weekly festival. According to a
youth of a leafy Muslim neighbourhood in the Gauteng region, "The sun
must rise". Such confounded gaterhings where youths sing along until
the early hours of the morning right through the mubarak time of
tahajjud and even fajr are devoid of the glad tidings of the malaaika
and are in fact attended by shaitaans.
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah
(sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "The Malaaikah do no associate
with a group in which there is a dog or a bell (Muslim and Abu
Dawood) Hadhart Abu Umaamah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "When someone raises
his voice with singing, Allah Ta'ala sends two shaitaans who sit on
his shoulders striking his breast with their heels until he stops
Recent scientific experiments have proven that music affects ones
emotions, possess the ability to increases arousal in terms of
alertness and excitement and also leads to various physiological
changes in the listener. A person's mood can change with the song
he/she may be listening to. Some songs induce feeling of sadness and
others seemingly bring excitement and joy to the heart. This effect,
quite interestingly, can be achieved at an alarming rate without even
the aid of lyrics. The combination of the different satanic elements
of a song alone, are sufficient to manipulate the listeners heart and
mind. An individual's emotions can be altered literally within
A song listened to today can be replayed in the brain some ten years
later with the exact rhythm and tune. It doesn't take the most
learned of men to realise that this is extremely hazardous and can
render irreparable damage to the heart and imaan of a Muslim.
Hadhrat Ibn Mas'ud (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah
(sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Beware of listening to musical
instruments and singing, for verily, both these acts germinate nifaaq
(hypocrisy) in the heart just as water causes vegetables to grow."
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) regarded listening to music
as an immoral act form which his followers should abstain. Listening
to music constitutes disobedience and defiance of Nabi-E-Kareem
(sallallahu alayhi wasallam). Sitting at gatherings where singing
and music pollute the atmosphere and the listeners ears and enjoying
such gathering amounts to kufr.
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah
(sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Listening to music is sinful.
Sitting at such gatherings is fisq (immoral transgression). Deriving
pleasure from it is kufr." (Nailul Autaar)
The punishment for listening to music far outweighs the apparent
pleasure that is induced by listening to the voice of shaitaan.
Hadhrat Anas (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu
alayhi wasallam) said: "Whoever sits and listens to a singing girl,
Allah will pour molten lead into his ears on the Day of Qiyaamah."
Hadhrat Ali Bin Abi Taalib (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "When my Ummah
indulges in fifteen misdeeds, calamities will settle on them. Among
these are singing girls and musical instruments." (Tirmizi)
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah
(sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "During the last of ages (in
close proximity to Qiyaamah) a nation form my Ummah will be
disfigured (and transformed) into apes and pigs. `The Sahaabah
said: "O Rasulullah! Will they be Muslim?" Rasulullah (sallallahu
alayhi wasallam) said: "Yes, they will be testifying that there is
no deity but Allah and that I am his Rasool, and they will be fasting
(in the month of Ramadhaan). "The Sahaabah asked: "O Rasulullah!
What will be their condition (to warrant such chastisement)?"
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "They will be
indulging in musical instruments, singing girls, musical drums, and
they will be consuming liquor. They will one night go to sleep after
their liquor and amusement. When they arise in the morning, they
will have been disfigured (and transformed into apes and pigs)."
Conditioning of the masses
With the advent of advanced computers and recording equipment, it has
become known that music can be utilised as a tool of backtracking and
brainwashing. When a song is played backwards, a different message
can be heard. The frightening part is that although his may not be
heard by the listeners who play the songs in normal mode (with the
tape going forward) this message can be picked up by the subconscious
mind and it takes its effects when the listener resigns to sleep.
All sorts of shaitaani messages can be used to brainwash the masses
to a certain way of thinking. Allah Aza Wajal alone knows best
whether this evil conditioning of the masses has commenced or not.
This vicious system of backtracking can result in a Muslim who
listens to music chanting utterances of shirk without his/her
Aiding shirk in any way can have calamitous repercussions at the time
of maut and can even lead to dying without imaan. Allah Ta'ala has
warned the believers in the Quraan Majeed to die only in the state of
Islam. If we fail to live up to his command and leave this world
without imaan because we couldn't live without a miserable activity
like listening to music and while engaged in this futile activity we
knowingly or unknowingly participated and aided in shirk, we will
have only ourselves to blame!
It behoves us to now to evaluate our spiritual condition and strive
to make islaah of the nafs. If it applies, cut out the vile act of
listening to music. This applies to Muslims of all ages especially
the youth. You can never be too young to make amal-e-saliha and
abandon frivolous acts that only pave the path to jahanam.
From experience it is understood that cutting out the evil of music
form one's life may be hard as it may have taken firm root in the
heart and system by now. However, remembering the promise that:
what Allah Ta'ala has in store for the mu'mineen in the akhiraat is
far better than the enjoyment and entertainment of this world, should
soothe the heart of the mu'min. "And verily, the reward of the
Hereafter is better for those who used to believe and used to fear
Allah and keep their duty to Him (by abstaining for all kinds of sins
and evil deeds and by performing all kinds of righteous good deeds)."

There is nothing wrong with most music, it calms and refreshes the spirit and soul.
However it is true that some music is less than disirable but there are few instances of that most music is worth listening to.
Allah would not have created it if he did not want people to enjoy it and it is enjoyable to listen to and to dance to.
Only old foggies say music is haram.
Judgement day passes in the moment we decide something needs attention & we take positive action. Then there will be a great sorting out of people into groups, Inspired by Surah 99 Ayat 1-8

ysimjee - Regarding Music: The voice of Shaitaan...
Some forms of music are contemplative and spiritual, or simply celebratory, while others are satanic. Certainly, banning them all would eliminate the satanic kind. However, people like dancing at weddings and other happy events, and banning that would not, IMHO, do very much to advance human morality.
PS: Please write shorter posts in the future, and refrain from excessive font sizes. They are a shaitaanic distraction...
