Only music which is played before idols is haram. Also haram is the music that creates lust feelings about sex.
You can listen to any music that provides a catharsis or is in praise of Allah or his prophet saw.

Some clerics want to make life miserable when Allah has made life easy for us.

I never understand the logic of this ruling, how on earth can music be haram? In many discussion either in person as well on the net it seems most people mixing musics with songs. I listen to musics 90 percent of the time and hardly listen to songs.

I just going to give few example below of what I like most. Just disregard the woman's movement at the 4th sample as she is actually playing the music. I actually love the way she played it though.

1. Night in white satin
2. Speak softly
3. Pas de deux - Nutcracker
4. Asturias

Salam Alaikum,

Islam is an easy belief system which has been made difficult by clerics. The principle is anything not forbidden is permissible. A great scholar Dr Hamidullah came to Bhawalpur university where some students asked about music and he said it is permissible. As music and rhythm are found in nature and prophet Muhammad (SAW) had once asked for music in a wedding ceremony.

Only the music played at the idols or that music which arouses lust is forbidden. A good music which provides catharsis or creates love of Allah and his messenger is not haram. He asked clerics to quote one authentic hadith that forbids music and they could not.
And excessive music that deters one from prayers and duties should be avoided.

I hope, this clarification is acceptable.

Anything that takes away from Allah and deen becomes haraam.as far as music is concerned I m good in playing piano besides being a doctor.i don't play songs that leads to idol worship.there is no verse in Qur'an that forbids music according to my knowledge.many people also say the same about cricket and I love cricket but I also make sure that my interests should not move me away from Allah.i prefer to emphasize more on following main aspects of Islam such as offering salah(ch 20 v 130),respecting parents (ch 17 v 23-24,ch 29 v 8),keeping fasts during Ramadan(ch 2 v 183),not doing backbiting (ch 49 v 11-12,attending jummuah salah(ch 62 v 9) etc rather than emphasizing on minute aspects.

Anything that's harmful is haram in Islam. That's your basic guideline.
Allah says in Surah Luqmaan (interpretation of the meaning):

“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…” [Luqmaan 31:6]

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…”

Musical instruments are haraam except for the daff – without any rings (i.e., a hand-drum which looks like a tambourine, but without any rattles) – when used by women on Eids and at weddings...

If you are too addicted to music then listen for the good list. Like Sami Yousaf who sing good Islamic songs.
Regards.

Salam,

Just imagine you watch a movie without any music/instrument/sound effect involve. Tell me what do you think?
Salam/Peace,
