Salaam Alaykum--Brothers and Sisters, I have a question. After many years of feeling a call to Islam, I finally decided to take the personal Shahada. Inchallah, I plan to take the public Shahada this weekend. Although I believe Islam is the truth and the way I wish to live my life, I worry that I will never be able to fully understand Islam or Salat because of my lack of knowledge in Arabic. My fiancee is Yemeni, so he is fluent in Arabic and has been helping me to learn, but I am unsure if I will ever become fluent. Most importantly, I worry my Salat will never be sufficient because of my lack of Arabic. So, my question is, would it be permissible for me to pray Salat and make Dua in English? I wish very badly to pray in Arabic, but until I am fluent (or if this does happen) is English an option?
Thank you , and please Brothers and Sisters, make Dua for me to fully know and understand the truth. |

Assalamu alaikum, Welcome to Islam and ICforum, hope you enjoy your stay on both.
Regarding shalat, in the beginning you can pray in English while you are learning the Arabic. The most important recitation in shalat is al-fatihah, is only 7 verses, insha Allah it will not take that long.
No need to be hurry, do it slowly but consistent, , so insha Allah you will get there.
Here a video about shalat from this website:

Wa Alaikkum As'alaam
It is not permissable to pray in any language other than Arabic. However you can make du'a in any language. When learning to pray it is essential that you know Surat Al Fatiha which is called the opener. Every Raka'h consists of this prayer. As I'm also a new muslim I was told to learn two short Sura's whihc will be enough for a while until you learn more Insha'Allah. Reverts are asked to learn Surah Al Kauther and Surah Al Ikhlas chapters 108 & 112 respectively. You will also find other short Sura's towards the end of the Holy Qur'an. After taking the Shahada I just took my time learning these because it can be overwhelming as first of all it a completely new language and pronounciations are a bit hard on the tongue and throat. :) So don't feel that you have dive in at the deep end. The main thing is to take the Shahada Insha'Allah and the rest will come in time. There are tons of material on the internet, even youtube has videos which teaches how to pray and make ablution etc. If you go to your local majid or Islamic Centre they will help Insha'Allah as there will be sisters there who could advise you. May Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala give you guidance and keep you in the Straight Path. Ameen.
