Asalaamu Alaikum.

People can often get harmed from magic, evil eye / nazar, curse, bad luck, possession by Jinns and ghosts, etc.

But the first line of defence: How do we ensure that magics and evil eyes does not even affect us in the first place?

Thanks in advance.

Mahmut, magic isn't real. What's happening around us is driven by fundamental natural laws and we can rely on them.

Some people think that magics and evil eyes affect them, and they can in an indirect way. It's called the nocebo effect created by the human brain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nocebo_effect

The effect can be caused by a drug. If you tell a patient the drug will make you throw up, he or she might actually throw up, even if the drug is just a small pill of sugar. Talk about evil eyes can do exactly the same. So the best defense is not to believe in this kind of nonsense. Thirteen is not bad luck. Same goes for all other bad luck stuff. Period.

We all going to die sooner or later anyway, so why worry about the world?

When you see someone in real need, give assistance with your merciful heart, even if they are the magicians or any type of enemies who have inflicted you with injury. Life is short for playing game to stay alive. We racing against time to leave something here before the death arrive.

"No misfortune can happen on earth or in your souls but is recorded in a decree before We bring it into existence: that is truly easy for Allah"(57:22)

"The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo! he, between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he was a bosom friend" (41:34)

"O my son! Establish worship and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity, and persevere whatever may befall thee. Lo! that is of the steadfast heart of things." (31:17)

Bob, I'm just not willing to accept that well-meaning, intelligent Muslims should be deprived of higher education and access to scientific knowledge. Call me an idealist. But, yes, sometimes it's frustrating.

PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PSYCHIATRIC PERSPECTIVES

Possession states can be understood only through a combination of biological, anthropological, sociological, psychopathological and experimental perspectives. The patient's own interpretation must be taken into consideration. This will promote collaboration10 even if it has little bearing on the treatment given.11 Instruments that have been developed to elicit patients' explanatory models include the illness perception questionnaire12 and the short explanatory model interview.13

Interesting article, Abuayisha. The Catholic Church used the term demon for jinn. Until the late 19th centuries doctors have had a poor understanding of mental illnesses, let alone appropriate treatment. Sigmund Freud triggered a revolution, but it still took many decades to come up with a sophisticated classification like

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ICD-9_codes_290%E2%80%93319:_mental_disorders

Until the late 60s the Catholic Church in Germany still arranged for exorcists to treat children which suffered from Asberger's. Then they finally gave up such nonsense. Superstitions take long to be eliminated.

So all these possession states are contained in the ICD-9 lists. There is no external jinn "infecting" people's brains. It's all about mental disorders that can be treated with modern therapies.
