But to marry, the woman has to convert to Islam, is that not correct? And if I understand, while a Muslim man can take a wife of another faith as long as they convert to Islam, the same is not available to Muslim women... Is my understanding of that correct?

yes that is true.

I've heard its the same in Jewish faith as well. For a woman to marry non-jew, he must first become Jew, or she will be considered an apostate and her children will no longer remain Jew.

Chapter 2 verse 177:

Yusuf Ali

It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces Towards east or West; but it is righteousness- to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing.

and as far as I'm concerned there is nothing at all wrong with it. What I want to know is if it is something that can be accepted in the Islamic community. Too many Muslims I have spoken with have too much animosity towards the Jews... towards a people that I see as having so much in common with their arab Muslim cousins that I think it is a shame they are not friends.

Yes, i briefly came to know someone who was a Jew. But do not have any contact since quite sometime. However all our interactions were on a friendly note, would still want to refer to him as a friend.

Are you concerned about the twosome of Jews and Muslims in particular or you want to know if Muslims befriend any who is a non-muslim.

Like anyone else, Muslims maintain different friend circles. They may include non-muslims as friends, depends on how well they click with eachother.

My guess is, it could be due to the political unrest in Palestine. Personally I have not had a chance to meet too many jews.

My own take on humanity is that we are all created on same basic nature, we feel the same kinds of pain and become happy due to similar circumstances. We fall in love, get angry, feel joy and have all kinds of emotions irrespective of our race, religion, geography etc.

In the Quran Allah has said that He created all of humanity from a single person, then spread in various lands, [ie we have many differences amongst eachother] - so that we know eachother. There is a lot of wisdom in the differences that we see between people - customs, norms ettiquetttes etc ... just realized this recently thru a personal experience.

I love that.

That is how I have always felt.

Everyone brings something special to the world that adds, as they say, flavor. I look at the time of cooperation during the Byzantine era and what that accomplished. When many can come together in cooperation wisdom grows.

I do think we need to choose people who share values, but people can share the same values even though they have different faiths. I believe those who belong to God need only stand out as different from the world and that can only be judged on an individual basis.

The answer is absolutely YES... Not only this is in accordance with Islam but also it is the norm in all Muslim communities. In fact, there are sizeable Jewish minorities living in many Muslim countries. I have had many Jewish friends and I continue to do so. The issue of the Zionist state (Israel) is another matter. Zionists have made millions of Muslims and Christians homeless and taken over their land. Those who remain in Israel live under terrible conditions. Until and unless these oppressed people and their refugees are given a just and enduring solutions, hostilities in the region will continue.

Finally, I must point out that it is not necessary or mandatory for a Christian or Jewish woman to convert to Islam in order to marry a Muslim. She may do so without converting. Personally I know many such couples.
