Now some say, Ashabul Aykah and the Madyanites are two different communities and Prophet Shuayb was sent to both of them.

(7:85) And to Madyan, their brother Shu'ayb....

Some others say, both are the same people, the descendants of Madyan and they're mentioned as Ashabul Aykah because of their deification of Aykah (meaning 'tangled vegetation').

Which opinion's right? Allah knows best.

What is the significance of fasting during this month [Muharram} ?

Wa'alaikum salaam wa rahmatullah

Prophet Muhamamd (s.a.w) used to fast on 10th Muharram, when he came to Madinah and found out that the Jews also used to fast on the same day in remembrance of Prophet Musa (a.s). He liked this tradition of the Jews and said, "I am closer to Musa than you are." So he fasted and also told his companions to fast. But to differentiate ourselves from the Jews, he asked us to fast an extra day on the 9th as well. So fasting on 'ashura' is Sunnah.

“Fasting the day of `Ashura' (is of great merits), I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year” (Muslim).

"Concerning the day of `Ashura’, it is not obligatory upon you to fast on it as I do. Whoever wishes may fast and whoever does not wish to is not obliged to do so" (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

BTW - fasting in Muharram is also encouraged by Sunnah even on days apart from Ashura (9th/10th). Abu Hurayrah said: "I asked: 'Which fasting is the best after that of Ramadan?' He (Prophet Muhammad) said, 'The month of Allah that you call Muharram’" (Ahmad, Muslim, and Abu Dawud).

Prophet sallal lahu alayhi wasallam said, "There is a man, if he accepts this Deen, there shall be no home in Madinah that will not become Muslim"

Who was this sahaba of whom Prophet told of,in the above stated saying ?

NO.. I do not think that is Umar RAA, because Umar came a Muslim to Madinah. I need to search more.. I love questions that make me search..

And whoever seeks a religion other than Islâm, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers(3:85)
