I agree, but without political stability, Western companies won't invest. Islamists are on the rise in the Middle East and North Africa. They are a serious threat in all Sahara desert regions where green energy could be produced.

Anyway, I found it quite interesting reading through the website about their activities in the Middle East in the field of energy efficiency in energy generation, about renewable energy but also about oil and gas.

A positive trend observed in 2012 was that eco-friendly products became easily available with a number of online and offline retailers making themselves more accessible to the public. Advertisements in social, print and mass media have made consumers aware of these retails selling environment friendly products. I agreethat solar energy isn’t expensive anymore. Especially in the Middle East, as thereis a great potential for clean energy. The Desertec initiative proves it. By2030 renewable energy will be responsible for meeting 13 percent of worldenergy demands.

It is rarely mentioned that besides generating clean energy, energy efficienttransmission is very important. Such as high-voltage direct-current (HVDC)transmission and distribution via smart grids. An “intelligent” grid is goingto be implemented in the Masdar project.

If there's someone who doesn't know, a solar panel (also solar module, photovoltaic module or photovoltaic panel) is a packaged, connected assembly of photovoltaic cells. The solar panel can be used as a component of a larger photovoltaic system to generate and supply electricity in commercial and residential applications. Each panel is rated by its DC output power under standard test conditions, and typically ranges from 100 to 320 watts. The efficiency of a panel determines the area of a panel given the same rated output - an 8% efficient 230 watt panel will have twice the area of a 16% efficient 230 watt panel. Because a single solar panel can produce only a limited amount of power, most installations contain multiple panels. Called "greenwashing," marketing campaigns perpetuate this practice, aimed at helping companies increase their product sales by appealing to ecologically conscious buyers. To avoid purchasing "greenwashed" products, look for products approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Energy Star program or an ecologically conscious consumer-advocacy group such as the Green Good Housekeeping Seal.
