The Mughal emperor Jahangir (ruled 1605 to 1627), was fascinated by the flora
and fauna of India. A long lasting tradition of exquisite plant and animal
studies, painted very realistically, emerged under his vigorous patronage.
An artist singled out for high honor by emperor Jahangir was Mansur. He was
given the title, Nader al-Asri Ustad Mansur Naqqash (Wonder of the Age,
Master Designer Mansur). He is mentioned by name more than any other artist in
