Right Hand Artwork:
Fantasy Flowers.
Reproduction of an antique Album Leaf from Safavid Iran.
From the 16th century a new art form developed in Iran and Mughal
India - the composition and decoration of albums (known as muraqqa). Alternating
sheets of miniatures, drawings and samples of calligraphy, formed a kind of
miniature picture gallery intended for private contemplation. Studies of flowers
became especially popular.
This "fantasy" of different flowers seems to grow from a single
root. A natural approach to certain details in these flatly treated flowers is
combined with decorative devices. The strictly symmetrical composition of
tulips, roses and carnations in orange, pink and green is clearly silhouetted
against the light background. The decorative effect is the main principle of
design for this work.
Floral ornamentation went on to become an integral part of both, Indian and
Iranian book design, painting albums, architectural decoration, ceramics,
textiles, and all applied design in general.
