were frequently published in 18th century Ottoman Turkey.
Pious patrons of art commissioned famous calligraphers and
artists to write and illustrate such "Book Of Prayers". Early on it
became a custom to add miniature paintings of Mecca, "the ennobled",
and Medina, "the radiant", to these exquisite manuscripts.
Shown here is a reproduction of a miniature painting depicting
the sacred mosques in Mecca and Medina, attributed to Hafiz Mehmet. It forms
part of a "Book of Prayers" with calligraphy by Abdullah Edirnevi
(d.1728) and illumination and paintings by Hafiz Mehmet. Original bookbinding:
