Rural poverty in developing countries has escaped all solutions. Most of the proposals revolve around providing access for the poor to arable land, modern technology, improved inputs and easy credit. But they ignore the inhibiting role of interest-bearing finance in fighting rural poverty. The present study suggests a number of innovative proposals to provide interest-free finance for rural development. It shows how Islamic Banks can play an active role in improving the lot of the rural poor.
