The Sacred Art Of Quranic Calligraphy

Pre Islamic Arabs loved their language and the way it sounded but looked down upon writing. Hardly any effort was made to develop the Arabic script. But the need to preserve the Quranic revelation in writing could not be ignored for long. So the Arabs broke with the past and decided to make the written record of the Quran, as powerful an experience for the eyes as the memorized record – when spoken or chanted, is for the ear. Thus was born the sacred art of Quranic calligraphy.
Today pages of the Quran, removed from their original binding, can be seen in museums and libraries. Here they are admired, respected, protected and endlessly analyzed as "works of art" but the spritual dimension is neglected. Their eventual fate is to be traded (like a commodity) in the market place for their “artistic” value Forgotten are the abundant blessings embedded in each living word, nay in each stroke of the pen. Forgotten also are the piety and the hopes of those who toiled to make beautiful the Word of God with so much passion and integrity.
It is our fervent hope that like them you too, inshallah, will work diligently to understand, preserve and revive the blessed, Sacred Art of Quran Calligraphy.

Some Definitions:
Manuscript: A book written and decorated by hand, rather than printed.
Leaf / Folio: A single sheet from a book, that is, two pages (one on each side). The page on the right side of the binding is called “Recto” and the page on the left is the “Verso”.
Illuminated: Decorated with finely ground gold paint. Illuminated pages are usually painstakingly burnished to make them shine (glow).

Frequently Asked Questions about the IslamiCity Collection of Authentic Pages (Leaves) From Ancient Handwritten Quran Manuscripts

Q1. Are these folios really hundreds of years old? Yes. Each folio is unique, one of a kind. They are NOT reproductions, replicas or copies or anything other than authentic acts of personal worship frozen in time. We take great pains to ensure that all the folios in the IslamiCity Collection are genuine. Please see our 21 Day, Money Back, Total Satisfaction Guarantee.

Q2. Where do you get them? Why do you ‘buy’ and ‘sell’ the Quran? We work only with highly reputed professionals who have been approved by major libraries and museums like the Met in New York. These expert buyers constantly search all over the world, for high quality antiques. In many cases family heirlooms (such as Quran manuscripts) are purchased cheaply from families in financial distress (or otherwise insensitive to the value of their heritage). These manuscripts are than sold leaf by leaf to make a bigger profit. The pages of the original manuscript thus get dispersed all over the world. We, at IslamiCity are very unhappy to see the Quran reduced to a tradable commodity. But such is the reality of this world. Our motive in ‘selling’ Quran leaves is the respectful preservation and indeed the revival of the sacred art of Quran calligraphy. You can be assured that as a registered non-profit organization, IslamiCity makes sure that all ‘profits’ from these transactions are used for Dawa and outreach only. We are depending upon you, our customers, to honor the extra-ordinary personal acts of worship, performed by unknown calligraphers, hundreds of years ago.

Q3. How can I be sure that you are charging a fair price? The value of antique works depends on their condition. If pages have been stuck down with glue, have had their edges trimmed, or been exposed to adverse conditions such as damp or mold; the value will be affected. Visible ripples or brown spots can put off collectors. If the colors are faded, the value will be considerably diminished. Your best option is to buy only from reputed sources like IslamiCity. We provide accurate biographical information about the antique work. If requested, we can provide details of prices that similar antiques have fetched in the recent past. It is also noteworthy that IslamiCity is a duly registered non-profit organization. All revenues are therefore used to serve the community. No individual salesperson or owner benefits personally by selling at a higher price.

Q4. What do you mean by “Museum Quality Frames”? How are they beneficial for me? We use stylish, ‘Museum Quality Custom Preservation Framing’, to protect your precious Quran page from the ravages of time. This means that only UV glazing and the highest quality acid free materials and professional techniques are used for framing. Your Quran leaf thus has maximum protection from color fading, dust, moisture, finger marks and other harmful contaminants. Inshallah your framed Quran leaf will be passed on safely from generation to generation. Our frames also allow for ‘two-sided viewing’ of the Quran leaf, so that you can easily display and share your treasured Quran folio with family and friends.

Q5. How should I care for (clean and display) my framed Quran leaf? Avoid hanging or storing the frame in the basement, attic, or any other place with extremes in temperature and humidity. A stable, cool, clean and dry environment is best. Direct sunlight (or any other intense light source) must be avoided studiously. You must also avoid hanging frames directly above working fireplaces or radiators. Make sure to hang the frame with the use of two picture hooks. Nails are to be avoided. In short heat (very dry conditions), water (humidity), direct light and atmospheric pollution (smoke and greasy kitchen fumes) are to be avoided. The wooden frame should be wiped clean with a soft, dry cloth or brush from time to time. Never spray the UV glazing with liquid cleaners. They will run behind the frame and damage the matting and eventually the folio itself. Occasional use of a soft, moist cloth is ok.
