The cascading domes and six slender minarets of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque (also known as the "Blue Mosque" because of the blue tiles that adorn its interior), dominate the skyline of Istanbul, Turkey. Sultan Ahmet 1 wished to build an Islamic place of worship that would outshine Hagia Sophia - the monumental Byzantine Church, and the mosque named for him is the result.

The Blue Mosque was built (from 1609 – 1616) over the site of the ancient Roman Hippodrome and the Byzantine imperial palace. Church and Mosque now stand next to each other in Istanbul’s main square, and it is up to visitors to decide which is more impressive.

The Blue Mosque was designed by architect Mehmet Aga, whose unfortunate predecessor was found wanting and executed. The original mosque complex included schools, a hospital, a market, and the tomb of the founder. Most of these buildings were torn down in the 19th century. However, the mosque itself has been used continuously by thousands of pious worshippers everyday.

The Quranic inscription shown here, decorates one of the interior domes. It has been translated by Yusuf Ali as follows:

“In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Glory to ((Allah)) Who did take His servant for a Journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest Mosque, whose precincts We did bless, - in order that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the One Who heareth and seeth (all things).”
